What is Motherwort?

Motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca) is an ancient medicinal herb, known for its calming effects on both the body and the mind. It’s often used for stress, anxiety, emotional unrest, and even heart palpitations caused by tension.


What is Motherwort good for?

Motherwort is truly a "heart herb," traditionally used by herbalists to support both emotional and physical heart-related issues.

  • Calming effects on stress and anxiety

  • Helps with overstimulation and hypersensitivity

  • Relaxes the nervous system

  • May help with mild heart palpitations caused by tension

Why make a Motherwort tincture?

How to make Motherwort tincture

You’ll need:

  • Fresh (preferred) or dried Motherwort (tops and leaves)

  • 40% vodka (e.g., Absolut Vodka)

  • Mason jar or glass jar

  • Label + pen


Steps:

  1. Cut the tops and leaves (avoid thick, woody stems).

  2. Place them in a clean glass jar (fill ¾ with the herb).

  3. Pour 40% alcohol over the herb until it’s fully covered.

  4. Seal tightly and label with the date + contents.

  5. Let it infuse for 6 weeks in a dark place, shaking daily.

  6. Strain and store in dark dropper bottles.


Dosage (general): 20-30 drops in water, 3 times a day (you can adjust after professional advice).


Who should NOT use Motherwort?

  • During pregnancy or breastfeeding

  • If you have low blood pressure

  • In combination with heart medication

  • If you have thyroid issues


How to use this tincture?

Add a few drops to a glass of water or herbal tea whenever you feel stress or tension. It can also be taken as a daily support during periods of emotional unrest.
